The U.S. Department of War forcibly removes the Chickasaw from their homelands in Mississippi, Kentucky, Alabama, and Tennessee to Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). Unlike other tribes, the Chickasaw negotiate compensation for land dispossession (more than $500,000). They travel the same routes as the Choctaw and Muscogee. Once in Indian Territory, they initially share territory with the Choctaw (Native Voices, "1837: Chickasaw are removed to Indian Territory").
